A milkshake starts with the right recipe.

Yes, the original Ninja SLUSHi makes milkshakes and coffee frappés from a liquid mix, without added ice. Its Milkshake and Frappé presets give you two starting points. Use the setting specified by your recipe; coffee can appear in either kind of drink. See the original Ninja SLUSHi product details and our preset and coffee guide.

For your first batch, use a recipe written for your machine. Follow the ingredient quantities, dissolve the sugar and check the marked fill range. The original US Ninja SLUSHi has an 88 fl oz vessel but a 64 fl oz maximum liquid fill; those are different measurements. Other models have different capacities, so use your own vessel markings and manual.

Know your ingredients

Read the label. Keep the proportions.

Milk is part of the sugar total

A hypothetical milk drink labelled 7 g sugar per 100 ml contributes 49 g sugar in a 700 ml portion. Count the milk and syrup before adding more.

Scale every ingredient

A half-size batch uses half of each ingredient. Topping up only with milk or coffee changes the recipe as well as its volume.

Texture needs more than a number

Sugar calculations cannot predict dairy foam, aeration or creaminess. Keep your recipe and preset as a baseline, then compare one change at a time.

Start with the manufacturer’s mix

Ninja’s Easy Chocolate Milkshake gives a machine-specific starting formula. Our chocolate shake guide explains how to use it as a baseline and keep toppings separate from the batch.

FAQ

Milkshake questions

Ninja’s Easy Chocolate Milkshake starts with milk, cream, sugar and flavourings, rather than ice cream or added ice. Follow a SLUSHi-specific recipe instead of transferring a blender recipe unchanged.

Treat a substitution as a recipe change. Check its sugar label and use a recipe that accounts for the substitute. A matching sugar figure alone does not prove that two milks will have the same texture. Our frozen coffee guide shows how syrup swaps change the sugar total.

Ninja advises dispensing Milkshake and Frappé drinks within 30 minutes after the preset ends to help avoid foam. See Ninja’s guidance and the foam troubleshooting steps. This is a texture recommendation, not food-storage advice.
